AKIHIKO SUGIURA

This artwork mixes purely physical non-representational art with a base of traditional representational painting. The theme of this artwork is that all kinds of extremities coexist, coming and going therein.
This is an experiment in rejecting conventional views of painting, reconsidering the very act of viewing, and again reassessing traditional oil painting.

By depicting characters that include various modern-day questions such as “Are we alive or dead?,” “What is gender?,” “Are humans something else?,” and “Real or virtual?,” I want to draw viewers into the imagination of these paintings, while also pushing viewers back into reality with blank spaces and actual materials arranged in places around the canvas.
There is also a feeling of being beckoned to return to a world of imagination, because everything can be interpreted in many ways depending on this extent of contact.
Such a view is also connected to the philosophical and Zen Buddhist perception of the world, and I feel that this is an important way of thinking in people’s lives.

Ultimately, while my artwork certainly takes the form of painting, it is not painting in the traditional sense; it represents something, yet does not represent anything; there is meaning, and yet it is meaningless.
It is also retinal artwork, while at the same time being ideological art rather than retinal art.
While there are correct interpretations of this artwork, at the same time there are no correct interpretations.
