CHARLES MARBURG

My work focuses on organic and geometric forms. I have a large collection of hand cut stencils, accumulated over the life of my studio practice, that I use to investigate compositional and color possibilities.I began making stencils in order to create alternative lines/levels of inquiry from one painting to the next. I like to think of this pursuit in terms of a spiral, and not as a never ending hall of mirrors.
I paint on masonite, birch plywood panels, and also canvas stretched over plywood; primarily because these hard surfaces lend themselves to scraping and sanding.I consider the intimacy of the smaller format of easel size paintings best suited for my subject matter.
