GALEN CHENEY

My creative process and psyche as well as the exploration and manipulation of materials are the chief drivers of my work. Experimentation, risk taking, and pushing my own boundaries are ongoing concerns, always with an eye toward gritty beauty and a palpable energy. This energy alternately recalls natural forces and more urban frequencies.
The paintings I am making now are constructions, really--multi-layered and sometimes doublesided. I am ruthless in my process and will often rip paintings up and adhere or weave those fragments into new works. The process is additive and reductive and imbues the work with a sense of time and memory.
