GREGORY P. GARVEY

BIO
In 1982, while finishing graduate school at MIT I exhibited “Labyrinthos” – a large-scale computer controlled ‘stochastic’ maze of locking doors. This was the first of a series of works that explored interaction as an organizing principle of my art–an art of interaction.

Interaction design is key to digital video games and I subsequently worked in the games industry at Parker Brothers (the makers of Monopoly - based on the Landlord Game designed by Elizabeth J. Magie) and later Spinnaker Software.

I have exhibited at Pratt Manhattan Gallery, Harvest Works and the Alternative Space Gallery on West Broadway in New York; at the Landesmuseum in Linz, Austria; the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; Tech Fest in Mumbai, India and elsewhere.

I am the founder and Director of the Game Design & Development Program at Quinnipiac University and previously chaired the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. When I first arrived at Quinnipiac I held the appointment of Visiting Fellow in the Arts and had a simultaneous appointment as Associate Artist of the Digital Media Center for the Arts at Yale University. Earlier I was Chair of the Department of Design Art at Concordia University in Montréal and served on the Board of Directors of the Montreal Design Institute. After finishing graduate school I held the appointment as Fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT from 1983–85.
