MARGARET ROLEKE
I am committed to gun control and donate a percentage of all my sold work to this cause. Recent sculptures are created out of spent shotgun shells which help to start a dialogue on this subject. I create large colorful , lyrical pieces; from a distance the viewer is not sure what they are made of. On closer examination one sees the branding of each shell and can also smell a faint aroma of gunpowder which creates a disturbing quality to the work. The amount of plastic and lead waste from these shells is also an issue that my work addresses.
Besides sculpture and installation I also create prints. Recent monoprints and silk screens also deal with gun control and gun violence. The current political situation has furthered pushed me into being an activist artist.
