My eyes like a pattern, my brain likes a puzzle. To that end, the constraints of the rectangle are central to my thinking. Each of my paintings begins as a grid. In response to the grid and to create tension I then draw organic shapes, scenes, and sometimes words. The elation I feel when I finish a painting is like no other. It has to do with the fact that while I am identifying for each painting its essential visual problem I am also at the same time solving it. It reminds me of juggling. A finished painting expresses duality. It bridges the gap between intellect and imagination.
