SUSAN MAIN

I am interested in the inconspicuous yet magnetic…the grip of the subtle rather than the flash of the spectacular…the overlooked and ordinary operating below the radar of desire or need, teetering on the threshold of perception…things that are in the peripheral vision yet subtly mark attention and consciousness…the world out of the corner of the eye.

My attempts to manifest this slippery territory include pairing the unmediated event with tools that attempt to measure, define, locate and orient. My artwork often places the viewer before or within a landscape that fluctuates between containment and release, focus and dissolution, attachment and sacrifice. Using a variety of media including painting, drawing, writing, video and projection, I am exploring the qualities and relationships between attention, mediation and perception.
