Gravy started in 2011 by Drexel photography program alumni Emma Stern, Katie Tackman, and Benjamin Riley in a motorcycle warehouse space in Fishtown. Since then Gravy Studio + Gallery includes 6 members and functions as a collaborative photography workspace and gallery located on 2nd Street in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia. Our goal is to serve as a multi-functional space that promotes the discussion and advancement of Photography as an art form. As one of the only photography based galleries in Philadelphia, we strive to support local photographers through gallery exhibitions, events, artist talks, and workshops. We are an artist owned gallery collective which fosters and equal dialogue between curator and artist. We strive to connect with the community through open dialogue about social, political, and artistic ideas filtered through the lens of photography. The rest is Gravy.

Exhibits have ranged from traditional matted fine art prints in simple black frames to Xeroxed prints turned into wallpaper. Many of our artists shoot film, use alternative processes, print on unique substrates, and use projection to transform their images. Other exhibits include creating custom zines on demand, photos paired with custom music tracks, tintypes, and photos with silk graffiti. We also choose artists who can show a new perspective on social issues and current events including the 2017 election, immigrant and refugee culture, fair trade food, the Philadelphia school system, and environmental issues. Almost all of our events are free and open to the community which is an important part of connecting and sharing our love for photography.
